Dr. John Stechschulte, graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1977, received his medical degree from The Ohio State University in 1980 and completed an Ophthalmic Surgery Residency at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. There he served as Chief Resident from 1983 to 1984. He received fellowship training in corneal and anterior segment surgery at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute/University of Miami, where he served as an Assistant Professor in 1984 and 1985.
Dr. John Stechschulte is active on numerous committees, professional boards and educational task forces. Since joining the Arena Eye Surgeons in 1985, he has been Director of Corneal Surgery. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and was elected to its national council and board. He is also a junior examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology. Dr. Stechschulte is past president of the Ohio Ophthalmological Society, a board member of the Medical Group of Ohio and a member of the International Society of Refractive Surgeons. He is past chairman of Ophthalmology for Grant Medical Center. Dr. Stechschulte is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at The Ohio State University. He is a Board Member of the Central Ohio Lion’s Eye Bank. He has lectured in the fields of refractive and corneal transplant surgery at Grant Medical Center, OSU Hospitals and various statewide meetings.
Dr. John Stechschulte was part of the original FDA investigator group for excimer refractive surgery from 1992 to 1995. In 1995, he led the Grant Laser Center Summit Technology Excimer program. From 1997 to present, he has been using the VISX excimer laser to treat nearsightedness, astigmatism and farsightedness by LASIK. He has received the 1999 VISX “Star” surgeon award, as one of the country’s top LASIK surgeons. He frequently participates in training other surgeons in these procedures. Dr. Stechschulte performs laser vision correction on hundreds of patients each year.
He and his wife, Jodi, have 5 children. He enjoys attending their athletic and school events, as well as attending theater, traveling and playing tennis and golf. He also volunteers for the Physicians’ Free Clinic and Joint Organization for Inner City Needs.
